Rachel de Queiroz

Rachel de Queiroz (1910–2003) was a prominent Brazilian novelist, journalist, playwright, and translator. A key figure in the second generation of Brazilian modernism, her work often focused on the socioeconomic challenges, poverty, and drought-stricken realities of Northeast Brazil. She was the first woman elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters (1977) and was awarded the prestigious Camões Prize in 1993.
