Fawzia Koofi is an Afghan politician, writer, and women's rights activist. She was born in 1975 in Badakhshan province, Afghanistan. Koofi was a Member of Parliament and served as the Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, making her the first woman to hold that position in Afghanistan. She has been a prominent advocate for women's and children's rights, education, and democracy. Koofi participated in peace negotiations with the Taliban and has survived multiple assassination attempts due to her activism. Following the Taliban's takeover in 2021, she went into exile but continues her advocacy work internationally.
