Clement C. Moore

Clement Clarke Moore was an American scholar, poet, and professor of Oriental and Greek literature. He is best known for authoring the Christmas poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which later became widely known as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." The poem, first published anonymously in 1823, significantly contributed to the modern image of Santa Claus. Moore also published academic works, including a Hebrew lexicon, and was involved in real estate development, shaping the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. While widely credited with the poem, some scholars debate his authorship, suggesting Henry Livingston Jr. as a possible alternative.
