Epic FantasyThe Winter of the World: Volume 2: The Forge in the Forest
Michael Scott Rohan
The siege of Kerbryhaine has been lifted and the Mastersmith slain, but for Alv—now known as Elof the Smith—the war against the encroaching Ice is far from over. Though the Ekwesh hordes were defeated, they are certain to seek revenge, Kerbryhaine remains a divided city, and the malevolent Ice continues its inexorable march southward. To secure a greater defense against the menace, Elof, the noble Kermorvan, Ils (princess of the Duergar), and their companions embark on a perilous expedition to the East to find and ally with the legendary lost cities and tribes of Morvan. Their journey takes them through the treacherous Tapiau-la forest, the domain of the deity Tapiau, where they encounter allies and threats. They eventually reach the Halls of Summer, a paradise inhabited by immortal refugees, but Elof soon discovers the sinister truth: those who remain there long enough lose their minds and become animalistic alvar. The quest is not only a struggle against the Ice and the Ekwesh but also a journey of self-discovery, revealing secrets about the Powers ranged for and against them, and the ultimate roles Elof and Kermorvan are destined to play.
