The novel is a coming-of-age story narrated by Baby, a thirteen-year-old girl living in the red-light district of Montreal. Motherless, she is raised by her young, heroin-addicted father, Jules, who constantly moves them from one dilapidated apartment or hotel to the next in his search for his next 'score' (which Baby knows as 'chocolate milk'). Baby navigates the hardships of her life with a remarkable, naive voice, finding small moments of beauty and happiness amid the squalor and neglect. Her life becomes increasingly perilous when a charismatic and dangerous local pimp named Alphonse sets his sights on her. To protect her, her father consigns her to a stint in juvie hall. The story follows Baby as she learns that her ultimate salvation must be her own invention, charting her path along the edge of the abyss toward a place of redemption and self-determination.
