The story begins with a tiny turtle hatching on a beach and setting off to sea. For about thirty years, she swims the oceans, wandering thousands of miles as she searches for food. The narrative culminates when the full-grown turtle returns, one summer night, to the very same beach where she herself was born to lay her own eggs, thus beginning the cycle of life anew.
