Marian Engel

Marian Ruth Engel (née Passmore) (1933–1985) was a Canadian novelist and teacher best known for her novel Bear (1976), which won the Governor General's Award. A founding member and first chair of the Writers' Union of Canada, Engel's work often explored the interior lives and identities of women. She taught, worked in publishing and advocacy for writers' rights, and published several novels and story collections before her death in 1985.
