Margaret Eleanor Laurence (1926–1987) was a Canadian novelist, short story writer and essayist, best known for novels that explore Canadian identity, gender, and rural prairie life. Her works, often set in the fictional town of Manawaka, include The Stone Angel, A Jest of God and The Diviners. Laurence was a major figure in 20th-century Canadian literature and received national recognition for her contributions.
