A former criminal defense attorney, she transitioned to writing full-time, focusing on stories that center and celebrate Black women. She is well-known for her American Royalty series and has been recognized by USA Today as one of the '100 Black Novelists You Should Read.' She lives in Virginia with her husband and three children.
