Kaye Gibbons
Kaye Gibbons is an American novelist known for her poignant, semi-autobiographical depictions of Southern life, focusing on themes of poverty, family trauma, resilience, and mental illness. Born in Nash County, North Carolina, she endured a turbulent childhood marked by her mother's suicide and her father's alcoholism, experiences that profoundly shaped her writing. Her debut novel, "Ellen Foster" (1987), earned critical acclaim and was adapted into a television movie. Gibbons has bipolar disorder and notes that she is extremely creative during her manic phases. She has three daughters and lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.
