Martin Gottfried

Martin Gottfried was an American critic, columnist, and author, born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Columbia College in 1955 and attended Columbia Law School. He served in the U.S. Army in Military Intelligence. Gottfried began his writing career as a classical music critic for The Village Voice and an off-Broadway reviewer for Women's Wear Daily. He later became a drama critic for The New York Post and Saturday Review. He is known for his biographies of prominent figures in the arts, including Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Miller, Bob Fosse, and Danny Kaye. His book "Arthur Miller: His Life and Work" was published in 2003. Gottfried won the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism in 1968 for his book "A Theater Divided: The Postwar American Stage." He passed away on March 6, 2014, at the age of 80.
