Michael Gruber is an American author born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 1, 1940. He currently resides in Seattle, Washington. Before becoming a novelist, Gruber had a diverse career, working as a cook, a marine biologist, a speechwriter, a policy advisor for the Jimmy Carter White House, and a bureaucrat for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He attended Columbia University and earned a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Miami. Gruber initially gained recognition as the ghostwriter for the first 15 novels in Robert K. Tanenbaum's popular "Butch Karp" series. After his collaboration with Tanenbaum ended, Gruber began publishing novels under his own name. His works often blend genre fiction with philosophical and supernatural themes. His novels have included the "Jimmy Paz" trilogy, "The Book of Air and Shadows" (a national bestseller), "The Forgery of Venus," "The Good Son," and "The Return." He also wrote a young adult fantasy novel, "The Witch's Boy," which won the 2006 Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award for Middle Grades/Young Adults. Gruber has stated that he finished writing his last published novel in 2012 and has since self-published four additional novels that failed to find traditional publishers.
