Merriam-Webster is an American company that publishes reference books, most notably its dictionaries. It is the oldest dictionary publisher in the United States. The company's lineage traces back to Noah Webster, an American lexicographer who published his first dictionary in 1806. The Merriam brothers, George and Charles, founded G & C Merriam Co. in 1831 and later acquired the rights to Webster's dictionary. The company adopted its current name, Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, in 1982. Merriam-Webster is known for its authoritative dictionaries, its active social media presence, and its annual "Word of the Year" selection.
