The King of Infinite Space

Lyndsay Faye's novel is a lush, magical, queer, and feminist retelling of Shakespeare’s *Hamlet*, set in modern-day New York City. The story centers on Ben Dane, a neuro-atypical physicist, who is consumed by the suspicious death of his Broadway theater baron father. Convinced it was murder rather than an accident or suicide, Ben is further tormented by his mother’s shocking, rapid marriage to his uncle, Claude, and tries to get a detective to reopen the case. He calls upon his estranged best friend, Horatio Patel, with whom he has a complicated romantic past, to help him investigate and unravel the dark mystery. Meanwhile, Ben’s artist ex-fiancé, Lia, while in addiction recovery, is drawn into the fold of three seemingly ageless, mystical florists from New Orleans. These sisters teach Lia the magical language of flowers, whose bouquets hold both curses and cures. As the three main characters—Ben, Horatio, and Lia—become caught up in the otherworldly events, their kinetic forces collide on one explosive night that promises a tragic and inevitable outcome.
