Project Hail Mary A Novel

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission to save humanity, but when he wakes up from a coma on the spacecraft 'Hail Mary,' he has no memory of who he is, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. He finds himself millions of miles from home with two dead crewmates and a fuzzily returning memory that reveals an impossible scientific mystery. He must puzzle out an extinction-level threat to our species, an alien microorganism called Astrophage that is draining the sun's energy, which will cause a catastrophic ice age on Earth. Hurtling through space, Grace works to understand the problem and find a solution, which leads to an unexpected alliance with an alien from the 40 Eridani system. The story alternates between Grace's present efforts aboard the 'Hail Mary' and flashbacks detailing the crisis and the preparations for his one-way mission.
