Bill Watterson (born 1958) is an American cartoonist best known as the creator of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes (1985–1995). Renowned for his expressive artwork, strong opinions on creative control and syndication, and refusal to merchandise his characters, Watterson retired from daily cartooning in 1995 and has kept a low public profile since.
