Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German writer, poet, dramatist, and polymath. A central figure of German literature and the Sturm und Drang movement, his major works include the dramatic poem Faust, the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, and the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship. Goethe also made contributions to natural science, especially in morphology and color theory, and held administrative posts in Weimar.
