E. T. A. Hoffmann was a German Romantic author of fantasy and gothic horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, and artist. He is known for his stories that blend supernatural and sinister characters with realistic settings, often revealing the tragic or grotesque aspects of human nature. His works have significantly influenced 19th-century literature and inspired numerous adaptations in music and ballet, including Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker' and Offenbach's opera 'The Tales of Hoffmann'.
