William Thomas Harris III (born September 22, 1940) is an American novelist best known for creating the character Hannibal Lecter and for his suspense novels including Black Sunday, Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising. A former police reporter and Associated Press journalist, Harris is known for his reclusive nature and slow, meticulous writing process; several of his novels have been adapted for film and television.
