Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist best known for her beloved children's books featuring animal characters, notably The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Raised in London and privately educated, she created detailed watercolour illustrations and wrote stories that combined Victorian sensibilities with keen observations of nature. Later in life she became a respected sheep breeder and land conservationist in the Lake District, where she helped preserve large areas of countryside for the National Trust.
