Leo Lionni (1910–1999) was a Dutch-American author, illustrator, graphic designer, and artist. Born in the Netherlands, he lived in Italy and the United States, where he had a distinguished career as an art director and graphic designer before turning to children's literature at age 49. He is best known for his innovative use of collage in picture books that explore themes of individuality, community, and nature.
