Berta and Elmer Hader were an American husband-and-wife team who illustrated and wrote over 70 children's books. They won the Caldecott Medal in 1949 for 'The Big Snow'. Berta was born in Mexico and moved to the US at a young age, showing early talent in art and writing. Elmer was born in California and also pursued art, studying in San Francisco and Paris. They met in San Francisco and married in 1919. Their work often featured animals and nature, reflecting their conservationist and pacifist views. Elmer also did cover illustrations for several John Steinbeck books.
