Laura Kaplan was a member of Jane, the legendary underground feminist abortion service in Chicago, and a founding member of the Emma Goldman Women's Health Center. After moving to rural Wisconsin, she worked as a lay-midwife and established a shelter-based program for battered women. Later, on the East Coast, she advocated for nursing home residents and directed a managed care project for Citizen Action of New York. She currently serves on the board of the National Women's Health Network and has been involved in various community projects. Her book, "The Story of Jane," recounts the history of the organization and is also the subject of the HBO documentary "The Janes."
