Barbara Smith is a pioneering Black feminist, lesbian, activist, author, scholar, and publisher. She has played a significant role in defining and establishing the field of Black women's studies in the United States, and in opening up national dialogues on the intersections of race, class, sexuality, and gender. Smith was a co-founder of the Combahee River Collective and Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, the first U.S. publisher of books for women of color. Her writings have appeared in numerous publications, and she has taught at various colleges and universities. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 and has received numerous awards for her activism and literary contributions.
