Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He is internationally esteemed for his doctrine of nonviolent protest (satyagraha) to achieve political and social progress. Gandhi's birthday, October 2nd, is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti in India and as the International Day of Non-Violence globally.
