Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and a global advocate for compassion, nonviolence, human values, and interfaith dialogue. Born in 1935 in a small village in northeastern Tibet, he was recognized in early childhood as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama and received a traditional monastic education. In exile since 1959 following the Tibetan uprising, he has authored many books on Buddhism, ethics, and the intersection of science and spirituality, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet and his efforts to promote peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect.
