Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and a globally recognized advocate for peace, compassion, and human rights. Born in northeastern Tibet and recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama in early childhood, he received traditional monastic training and later led the Tibetan government-in-exile following his flight from Tibet in 1959. He has authored numerous books on Buddhism, ethics, and secular approaches to compassion, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet and his advocacy of peaceful solutions to international conflicts.
