Erika Leonard Mitchell (born 7 March 1963), known by the pen name E. L. James, is a British author best known for the Fifty Shades series of erotic romance novels. She began writing fan fiction before publishing Fifty Shades of Grey (2011), which grew into a global bestseller franchise including two sequels and a film trilogy. Her later works include The Mister (2019) and The Missus (2023).
