George Eliot

George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her major novels—Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner and Middlemarch—are celebrated for their realism, psychological insight, and social commentary. She adopted a male pen name to ensure her work was taken seriously and to avoid the stereotypes applied to women writers of her time.
