Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist and poet, best known for her novel Jane Eyre (1847). Born in Thornton, Yorkshire, she lived most of her life in Haworth where, with her sisters Emily and Anne, she produced several major works of nineteenth-century English literature. Her writing is noted for its moral seriousness, narrative intensity, and elements of Gothic romance and social critique.
