Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812–1870) was an English novelist, social critic and journalist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era, known for his rich characterisation, vivid depiction of social conditions, and satirical yet compassionate treatment of poverty and injustice. His major works include Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations. Dickens also gave popular public readings of his works and was active in social reform causes.
