Kate Chopin (born Katherine O'Flaherty) was an American novelist and short-story writer of the late 19th century, best known for her novel The Awakening (1899) and her collections of short stories depicting life in Louisiana. Her work explores themes of female independence, identity, sexuality, and social constraints; she is now widely regarded as an important precursor to American feminist literature and a significant figure in regionalist and realist literature.
