Emily Jane Brontë (1818–1848) was an English novelist and poet, best known for her only novel Wuthering Heights (1847), a landmark of English literature noted for its intensity, Gothic atmosphere, and complex narrative structure. Born into the literary Brontë family in Thornton, Yorkshire, she spent most of her life in Haworth where she worked as a governess and devoted herself to writing poetry and fiction. Her work was largely unrecognized in her lifetime but has since become canonical.
