Katherena Vermette
Katherena Vermette (born January 29, 1977) is a Canadian Métis poet, novelist, children's author, graphic novelist and filmmaker from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She won the 2013 Governor General's Award for English-language poetry for North End Love Songs and has received multiple honours for her fiction, including the Amazon.ca First Novel Award for The Break (2017) and the Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Fiction Prize (2021) for The Strangers. Vermette's work often centres Indigenous and urban community life in Winnipeg and addresses themes of identity, loss, intergenerational trauma and resilience. She has also produced documentary work and projects that support Indigenous-led search and memorial initiatives.
