Emily Carr

Emily Carr (1871–1945) was a Canadian painter and writer whose work was inspired by the coastal landscapes and Indigenous monumental art of British Columbia. Trained in San Francisco and later in England, she became known for powerful modernist depictions of forests, totem poles, and coastal skies. In addition to her paintings, Carr wrote memoirs and essays — her book Klee Wyck won the Governor General's Award in 1942. Her work has had enduring influence on Canadian art and cultural memory.
