Martin Waddell is a prolific and award-winning Northern Irish author of children's books, born on April 10, 1941. He is best known for his picture books featuring anthropomorphic animals, such as the "Little Bear" series and "Owl Babies." Waddell also writes under the pseudonym Catherine Sefton for older children, focusing on mystery and ghost stories. His work often explores themes of family, friendship, reassurance, and the emotional lives of children, drawing inspiration from his life experiences and the landscapes of County Down, Northern Ireland. Before becoming a writer, Waddell aspired to be a professional football player and even signed with Fulham FC. He has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing in 2004 and the "Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award" at the 2024 Irish Book Awards.
