Elizabeth Acevedo is an American poet and author of Dominican descent, known for her young adult novels written in verse. Her work often explores themes of race, identity, family, and social justice, particularly focusing on the experiences of Afro-Latina girls. Acevedo began her career as a spoken word artist and National Poetry Slam Champion before publishing her debut novel, "The Poet X," in 2018. She has since written "With the Fire on High" and "Clap When You Land." Acevedo has received numerous awards for her work, including the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Carnegie Medal, and the Michael L. Printz Award.
