Kwame Alexander (born Edward Curtis Kwame Alexander II) is an American poet, children's author, educator, publisher, and literacy advocate best known for his verse novels and picture books. He gained national prominence after winning the 2015 Newbery Medal for The Crossover and has written numerous bestselling works for children and young adults while founding literacy initiatives such as Book-in-a-Day and cofounding LEAP.
