Patricia Anne McKillip was an American author of fantasy and science fiction, known for her lyrical prose and mythic storytelling. She wrote predominantly standalone fantasy novels and was considered "one of the most accomplished prose stylists in the fantasy genre". Her work often explored themes of magic, mythology, folklore, and the complexities of human emotion. She began writing at age fourteen and published her first books in 1973. Her first adult novel, "The Forgotten Beasts of Eld" (1974), won the World Fantasy Award. McKillip's notable works include the Riddle-Master trilogy, "Ombria in Shadow", "The Book of Atrix Wolfe", and "Kingfisher". She received numerous awards throughout her career, including multiple Mythopoeic Fantasy Awards and World Fantasy Awards, culminating in a World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2008. McKillip passed away on May 6, 2022, at the age of 74.
