James R. Mellow

James Robert Mellow was an American art critic and biographer. He began his art career in the mid-1950s, working in editorial positions for Arts Magazine and Industrial Design in the 1960s. As an art critic, he wrote for The New Leader, Art International, and The New York Times from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. Mellow became a biographer in 1974 with his book on Gertrude Stein. He later released biographies on Nathaniel Hawthorne, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway. His biography on Walker Evans was posthumously released in 1999.
