James William Buffett was an American singer-songwriter, author, and businessman, known for his tropical music sound that blended country, rock, folk, and calypso. His persona often portrayed a lifestyle of 'island escapism,' promoting enjoyment of life and following passions. Buffett recorded many hit songs, including "Margaritaville," which is ranked highly on lists of "Songs of the Century." He formed the Coral Reefer Band in 1975 and achieved significant success in the 1970s, maintaining a loyal fan base known as "Parrot Heads." Beyond music, he was a successful entrepreneur, author of New York Times bestsellers, and a philanthropist. Buffett died on September 1, 2023, at the age of 76, after a battle with Merkel cell carcinoma.
