Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was an English novelist best known for Black Beauty (1877), a pioneering animal-centered novel written to promote humane treatment of horses. Largely educated at home due to poor health, she spent much of her life in Norfolk and published Black Beauty near the end of her life; the novel became an immediate success and has remained a classic of children's and Victorian literature.
