Eric John Hobsbawm (1917–2012) was a British historian known for his influential long-form studies of modern history, especially his multi-volume survey of the 19th and 20th centuries. His major works include The Age of Revolution, The Age of Capital, The Age of Empire and The Age of Extremes. Hobsbawm's scholarship combined Marxist analysis with broad syntheses of social, economic and cultural history and he was widely read both within academia and by general audiences.
