John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was an English philosopher, political economist, and civil servant. A leading proponent of utilitarianism, Mill is best known for works defending individual liberty, representative government, and gender equality. His major essays include On Liberty, Utilitarianism, Considerations on Representative Government, and The Subjection of Women. Mill's writings have been highly influential in liberal political theory and moral philosophy.
