Franklin W. Dixon is a pen name used by a variety of authors who wrote the Hardy Boys novels for the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The first and most well-known author to use this pseudonym was Canadian author Charles Leslie McFarlane. The outlines for the books are believed to have originated with Edward Stratemeyer, with later books outlined by his daughters Edna C. Squier and Harriet Adams. Other writers who have adopted the pseudonym include John Button, Amy McFarlane, and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams. The pen name was first used for the Hardy Boys series in May 1927 and later that year for the Ted Scott Flying Stories series.
