Herman Melville (1819–1891) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and poet. Best known for his seafaring novel Moby-Dick, Melville drew on his own experiences at sea and on whaling voyages to create works that blend adventure with deep philosophical and existential themes. Though underappreciated during much of his lifetime, his work was re-evaluated in the 20th century and he is now considered a major figure in American and world literature.
