Rennie Airth was a South African novelist known for his crime fiction, particularly the John Madden series. He worked as a foreign correspondent for Reuters before becoming a novelist. His novels are set in England and often feature historical settings, with the John Madden series taking place between 1921 and 1949. The first book in the series, 'River of Darkness,' was inspired by his uncle who was killed in World War I. Airth lived in Italy for most of his life.
