Mary Mapes Dodge

Mary Mapes Dodge was an American children's author and editor, best known for her novel Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates. She was a recognized leader in juvenile literature for almost a third of the nineteenth century. Dodge conducted St. Nicholas Magazine for over 30 years, making it one of the most successful children's magazines of its time and attracting contributions from renowned authors such as Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, and Rudyard Kipling. After her husband's death, she turned to writing to support her sons and educate them.
