Hugh Garner (1913–1979) was a British-born Canadian novelist and short-story writer known for his realistic depictions of working-class life in urban Canada, particularly Toronto. His experiences during the Great Depression, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II heavily influenced his writing. He is best known for his novel 'Cabbagetown' and for winning the Governor General's Award for his collection 'Hugh Garner's Best Stories' in 1963.
