Lothar Günther Buchheim was a German author, painter, art collector, and wartime journalist. He is best known for his 1973 anti-war novel 'Das Boot' (The Boat), which was based on his experiences as a war correspondent aboard the German submarine U-96 during World War II. He was also a significant collector of German Expressionist art, which he housed in the Buchheim Museum on Lake Starnberg.
